The IRS provides many valuable resources for free to U.S. taxpayers. Taxpayers who are so inclined may wish to subscribe to IRS email newsletters. As of early 2008, the IRS offers over 10 different e-news subscriptions.

IRS Newsletters for Businesses

Three IRS newsletters stand out as relevant to a large number of business taxpayers. This is not an exhaustive list of the available newsletters, but businesses and tax practitioners may wish to subscribe to the following newsletters to start off with:

  • Employee Plan News and Retirement News for Employers. It is unclear how often these newsletters are issued, but they both contain important retirement plan information and IRS announcements. Employee Plan News is of interest to companies, lawyers, and accountants, and Retirement News for Employers makes sense for business owners. This newsletter also synthesizes developing retirement plan news from other federal agencies.
  • e-News for Small Businesses. This newsletter, distributed twice per month, is appropriate for small business owners and self-employed individuals. It contains information on upcoming tax dates and announces new tax information as it pertains to those two groups.
  • Modernized e-File (MeF) for Partnerships. This newsletter announces new electronic filing developments of interest to partnerships.

Tax Professionals Have Access to Breaking Tax News

Several IRS newsletters are clearly appropriate for tax professionals within public accounting as well as those employed by companies. The following newsletters contain valuable information:

  • IRS Guidewire. This email newsletter contains links to IRS announcements, notices, revenue rulings, and revenue procedures (all forms of IRS tax guidance). This newsletter would be beneficial for tax professionals who wish to be notified of new guidance as it becomes available. The e-News for Tax Professionals newsletter is a similar subscription that tax professionals would find interesting.
  • IRS Newswire. This email newsletter comes straight from the IRS National Media Relations Office in Washington, D.C. and covers newsworthy IRS announcements. Topics may include changes in tax law and important updates.
  • IRS Tax Tips. This is a daily email during tax season with less frequent issues during the off-season. According to the IRS, these emails are brief and include tax tips like how to avoid common tax return preparation errors and how to file a tax return.
  • Tax Stats Dispatch Mailing List. This email announces new tax statistics posted to the IRS website. This email would be beneficial for news reporters, tax professionals, and possibly accounting educators.

How to Subscribe to an IRS Tax Newsletter

To subscribe to one the emails above and review additional resources, visit the IRS homepage, click on “Newsroom” near the bottom middle of the screen, and then “e-News Subscriptions” on the left side of the page.

Other IRS Tax Information Resources

The IRS wants individual taxpayers and businesses to have the information they need in order to prepare tax returns. Email newsletters are just one method the IRS uses to disseminate important tax information. Tax information is also available by phone or in person at local IRS offices.
